Alleged forgery: Senate welcomes withdrawal of charges against Saraki, Ekweremadu

The Senate has released a statement saying it welcomes the withdrawal of the charges of forgery and conspiracy leveled against its principal officers, Senate President Bukola Saraki and Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu. Read below
The Senate today said the forgery case against its presiding officers, Senate President Abubakar Bukola Saraki and his deputy, Senator Ike Ekweremadu has been a distraction to the law making body and that the withdrawal is a confirmation of its position that the nation cannot afford any sharp division between the various arms of government.
In a statement by its spokesman, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, the Senate said the decision to withdraw the case and its subsequent dismissal as well as the discharge of the defendants has confirmed its earlier position that the case was indeed an abuse of court process having been dismissed earlier by the court.
"We have always said it that that case was politically motivated. The executive cannot decide for the legislature the genuineness or otherwise of its standing rules. However, where there is a crack in the wall, it is easy for others to capitalize on the differences between us. Now that Senators have closed their ranks, the executive is only taking the right cue. We are happy with this development. We believe it is a sign of good things to come. It is a victory for democracy. A victory for separation of powers, checks and balances and constitutionalism.
"We commend the judiciary for its continuous dedication and commitment to the rule of law in our democracy. We restate our confidence in their ability to adjudicate and dispense justice in all matters in the polity which no doubt greatly contribute to national productivity. Our commendation also goes to the Federal Ministry of Justice for being courageous enough to do the right thing.  We however call on the government to go the whole hog and withdraw other cases with political coloration. This is a period for the political leadership to present a united front. There is an emergency in the country. The economy is in crisis. This has resulted in escalating and excruciating poverty among our people. Social problems are on the rise. There are conflicts across the country. National values are being eroded. Crucial Infrastructure and social services are collapsing. These are the things that should pre-occupy our minds, especially now that our economy is in recession.
" The International community will take us more seriously when they see that everybody in the national leadership is speaking along the same line of solving the economic problem, encouraging productivity, creating employment, promoting discipline and working to make our country great. For us in the Senate, the assignment of nation building continues. We will, as always re-dedicate ourselves to serve the nation for the benefit of our citizens. We assure our people that we will always protect their interests and like the Senate President said when we resumed a few weeks ago, our major pre-occupation now is to get the economy back on its feet again. ", Abdullahi stated.

Aregbesola's visit to Fayose is embarrassing, shocking and awful" - APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has described Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola's visit to Governor Ayodele Fayose as a slight on the ruling party and contempt for its leadership in the state. Aregbesola was in Ado-Ekiti on Saturday on invitation of Fayose for the 20th Anniversary of Ekiti State. At a public forum broadcast live on the state media, Aregbesola described Fayose as "omoluabi" and a hardworking governor who had turned around the fortunes of Ekiti State in terms of infrastructure.
"Fayose is a reliable person" he was quoted to have said, and that in spite of political differences, he and Fayose shared many things in common and "sooner than later, there will be realignment  of forces".
A statement by the Publicity Secretary of APC, Taiwo Olatunbosun, said that the visit shows the contempt into which the party and its leaders were held by the Osun governor after Fayose had caused severe pains in the lives of APC members, some of whom had been languishing in jail for about two years for the offences they did not commit.
"Aregbesola's visit to Fayose praising him as 'omoluabi' and for the achievements by APC-led government is not alone embarrassing but also awful in the face of sustained attacks on APC members, some of whom are still languishing in jail for about two years over trumped-up charges by Fayose. It is shocking that Aregbesola as a governor and one of the leading lights in APC in the South West and indeed the nation would be visiting Ekiti State without putting the leaders into confidence, more so on a visit to a man who once wished the President dead and had done unbelievable things both in Nigeria and abroad to bring Buhari's government down. Worse still, Aregbesola was praising the man who will stop at nothing to bring APC-led Federal Government down after several years of failed attempts by the progressives to win the presidency of Nigeria."
On the reported 'alignment between the two governors, Mr Olatunbosun said:
"We find it most embarrassing and shocking that one of our leaders would be planning a re-alignment of forces with a governor that has made life a nightmare for our members, the same members that will participate in the said re-alignment that Aregbesola is talking about, without sparing a thought for members held in jail unjustly while other APC members are routinely attacked by Fayose's men on the streets.
